Garmin is introducing a new series of handheld GPS units for outdoor lovers which matches a touchscreen with rugged design. It is called the Oregon series and pricing will range from around $480 to $640, depending upon the model.
Garmin said these new outdoor mapping handhelds are waterproof and sport “a high-resolution, color 3-inch screen that reacts as users tap or drag through menus and options.” They all make use of a “HotFix” feature for calculating and storing satellite information for later pinpointing a position without waiting for new satellite interaction. Each of the models is detailed a little after the jump and all will be available later this year.

Apparently in some parts of the world you’re not allowed to have a GPS device suction-cupped to your windshield. And if Johnny Law frowns on you doing that, I can only assume the other options like duct taping it to your steering wheel, or hanging it from your rearview mirror are also out of the question. That’s when you might have to settle for the Nav-Mat GPS Dash Mount from Bracketron. It’s basically a weighted pillow that features a mounting surface on top where you can attach your GPS device’s windshield mounting bracket. Its weight, combined with an anti-skid material on the underside allows the Nav-Mat to stay perched on your dashboard while supporting a GPS device that weighs as much as “several pounds.”

You and I both know that this is the only GPS worth a tinker’s damn. Do you really have to think about it? Mio’s new GPS system gives you directions using the voice of KITT. It promises lots of fun episodes in Vegas and a show-down with Semi-truck enemy or two. It boots up saying “Hello Michael, where do you want to go today?”

If you’ve ever watched Star Wars (please tell me everyone here has) you’ll remember that the location of the rebel base was outed when Vader and Tarken decided to put a homing beacon aboard the Millennium Falcon. Well if you’re ever paranoid that someone might be tracking you in a similar fashion, you might want to pick up one of these GPS Tracker Defense devices.
This is quite simply a GPS jammer. You need only to plug it into your car’s cigarette lighter and every GPS device within a 5-meter radius will be disabled. This of course means you won’t be able to use your own GPS to guide you to your location, but that’s the price you pay for paranoia. Well, that and around $300.

The NDrive G280 and G800 sat nav devices are soon to be launched. Each features photo mapping which shows a view of your route as an image of where you are. The benefit of this idea is that you will be able to see more clearly which junctions to turn at.Other navigation devices such as TomTom have 2D and 3D mapping, but from time to time it is still quite difficult to catch the exact turning you need. With photo mapping you will be able to see the buildings you are driving past so you have something to actually compare the route to. To help you get the best possible sense of where you are going the NDrive system offers 5 perspectives with 4 of them being diagonal and a 5th which offers a bird’s eye view.
